About GloFish
Brand background and key notes.
GloFish is a brand of genetically modified aquarium fish founded in 1999. Its origins trace back to a scientific discovery made by researchers at Oregon State University, who successfully integrated fluorescent genes from marine organisms into zebrafish, a species of freshwater fish. The initial goal was to develop a biological indicator to detect water pollution. However, this innovation led to the creation of colourful and luminescent aquarium fish.
The company GloFish, founded by Dr. T. Scott McLaughlin, began marketing these fish in 2000. The fish were initially sold in specialty stores and quickly gained popularity due to their bright colours and unique appearance. In 2002, GloFish expanded its product range, introducing new colours and variations to attract a wider audience.
In 2004, GloFish was acquired by pet industry giant Spectrum Brands Holdings. This acquisition allowed the brand to increase its market presence, facilitating the distribution of its products in numerous stores across the United States. Over the years, GloFish has continued to innovate, launching derivative products such as aquariums and accessories specifically designed to accompany its fluorescent fish.
Today, GloFish is recognised as a leading brand in the aquarium fish sector, offering a variety of fish, including species of different colours and patterns. The brand is also committed to raising awareness about the importance of preserving aquatic resources, while continuing to be a key player in the aquatic leisure field.
